Setiap individu yang belajar ilmu ekonomi, yang kemudian mgngbarap/can dan di/Jarap/can menjadi sarjana ekonomi, biasanya mempunyai satu bidang yang diminacinya. Saya sudah mulai meminati satu bidang studi dalam ilmu ekonomi sebelum rnemasuki Fakultas Ekonorni, yaitu: Ekonorni Pembangunan. Dua buku pertarna yang saya tulis adalah dalam bidang ini. Pada pertama kalinya saya ditugaskan mengajar cli Unlversitas Malaya (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) lebih dari tiga dekacle yang lalu, saya diminta untuk rnengajar ekonomi pernbangunan. Pada waktu yang sama saya ditugaslian mengajar Pengantar Makroekonomi (atau Ekonomi Makro). Ternyata keputusan administratif di Universitas Malaya tersebut rnenirnbulkan darnpak yang penting kepada perubahan bidang studi yang saya rninati. Walaupun masih tetap menyukai ekonomi pembangunan, makroekonomi telah menjadi favorit bidang studi saya. Apakah yang rnenarik dalam teori rnakroekonorni? Seseorang yang mulai belajar ilmu ekonorni akan rnerasa bingung kalau rnempelajari makroekonorni, dan rnungkin akan berkesirnpulan bahwa makroekonorni rnerupakan teori saja dan tidak ada kaitannya dengan hal-hal dalam kenyataan. Diakui rnakroekonorni lebih sukar dipaharni ketirnbang teorl rnikroekonorni. Pertama, hal itu disebabkan karena rnakroekonorni sangat menyeclerhanakan pola kegiatan ekonorni negara yang sebenarnya berlaku. Yang kedua, cara pendekatan dalam menerangkan makroekonomi berbeda di antara seorangpenulis dengan penulis lainnya. Yang ketiga, dan yang lebih penting lagi, aspek- aspek yang dilipilti dalam analisis makroekonomi terus menerus diperclebatkan dan dikembangkan. Perkernbangan pernikiran tersebut rnenirnbulkan efek yang sangat penting kepada bentuk analisis yang diliputi oleh teori tersebut.
