Irrigation systems are crucial for crop growth in areas with limited rainfall, making water management techniques essential. The flow of water in unsaturated soil is a complex and challenging problem to quantitatively characterize. Mathematicians, agriculture engineers, hydrologists, soil physicists, and hydrologists have long been interested in understanding the flow of water in unsaturated soil. This book presents a numerical investigation analyzed mathematical aspects of two-dimensional infiltration problems, focusing on irrigation channel infiltration into uniform soil. The study calculated matric flux potential using boundary integral equation techniques. The boundary integral equation method (BIEM) is a powerful numerical technique that can reduce the computation domain by one dimension, making it less flexible than the Finite Element Method (FEM). The BIEM is used to compute the matric flow potential throughout the soil using specific irrigation channel shapes, demonstrating its power. The methodology was developed to calculate matrix flux potential in a uniform soil medium with irrigation channels and various inclusions. This book serves Green’s function to determine the matrix flux potential, which was found to be consistent with conventional boundary element methods. The method was also used to resolve the partial differential equation for time-dependent flow, using Laplace Transform and numerical inversion to derive time-varying values of matrix flux potential across isotropic homogeneous soil.
